Drug uses
Ativan belongs to a class of drugs called benzodiazepines. The medicine helps to relieve anxiety, nervousness, and tension associated with anxiety disorders by affecting chemicals in the brain that may become unbalanced and cause these problems. Ativan is also used in treatment of certain types of seizure disorders and insomnia. This drug may also be used for other purposes not listed in the medication guide.
Warnings/Precautions
Narrow-angle glaucoma may be a serious contraindication for taking Ativan.
Tell your doctor beforehand if you have asthma, bronchitis, emphysema, or another respiratory disease; kidney disease; liver disease; or if you're depressed or have suicidal thoughts. In case you have any of these conditions, you may require a dosage adjustment or special monitoring during treatment or you may not be able to take Ativan at all.
The FDA pregnancy category D. This means that Ativan brings harm to an unborn baby. You must talk to your doctor in case you are pregnant or could become pregnant during treatment. Do not take Ativan if you are nursing as this medicine passes into breast milk.
You may be more likely to experience side effects, if you’re over 65 years old. In this case a lower dose of the drug may be prescribed.
Directions
Follow your doctor's directions when taking Ativan. Take it orally with a full glass of water.
Lorazepam is available as an injection too.
Do not take the medication in larger doses or for a longer period than it was prescribed for you. The medicine is habit forming. You may experience withdrawal effects if you stop using Ativan suddenly. That's why it is not recommended to stop taking this drug without consulting with your doctor.
Keep Ativan out of reach of children at room temperature away from moisture and heat.
Missed dose
The missed dose is to be taken as soon as you remember. But if it is already time for the next dose, skip the missed one. Do not double the dose. Then take the medicine according to the regular schedule.
Overdose
Seek emergency medical help, in case overdose is suspected. The symptoms of overdose include an appearance of being drunk, confusion, difficulty breathing, dizziness, difficulty walking and talking, a slow heart beat, sleepiness, unconsciousness.
Additional information
Caution is advised when driving, operating machinery or performing other potentially dangerous activities. Try to avoid these activities, if you experience drowsiness or dizziness.
Do not take alcohol while using Ativan. You should be aware that alcohol may increase the risk of some side effects, including drowsiness, dizziness and a seizure.
Ativan may interact with other drugs and increase the effects of other drugs that cause drowsiness, including anxiety medicines, alcohol, antidepressants, antihistamines, muscle relaxants, sedatives, pain relievers and seizure medicines.
Tell your doctor about other drugs, you are taking, including over the counter medicines.
Ativan side effects
Call an emergency in case you have any signs of an allergic reaction, including difficulty breathing; hives; swelling of your face, lips, tongue, or throat. If you have any of serious side effects such as agitation, confusion, depressed mood, hyperactivity, hallucinations, hostility, feeling light-headed, fainting, thoughts of suicide or hurting yourself; call your doctor immediately.
Appetite changes, amnesia or forgetfulness, blurred vision, insomnia, drowsiness, nausea, vomiting, constipation, dizziness, trouble concentrating, muscle weakness, tiredness, lack of balance or coordination, skin rash are among less serious side effects.
